Mizzen Crew
Apr 14, 2023 / 20:32
The Mizzen Crew, one of the area’s leading sea shanty groups, invite you to an evening of entertainment when they will lead you to join them singing traditional shanties and ballads of working life on the waters. There will be the occasional monologue and tunes thrown into the mix.
Sea Shanties were sang on tall ships to accompany repetitive tasks such as pulling up the anchor or setting sails, They are marked by call and response form with a lead vocalist or shanty-man singing the first line followed by the rest of the ship’s crew responding in chorus. Shanties were often used to comment on the ship’s “cuisine” or “management” and so varied in content from ship to ship. Well known sea shanty songs include “Blow the Man Down” which is associated with hoisting sails, “Leave Her Johnny”, a shanty sang whilst dropping the anchor when a ship had returned to port and “The Drunken Sailor.” Originally a customs bonded warehouse, ASC Clubhouse with its long maritime history is an ideal venue for sea shanty singing.
A mizzen mast is the third mast back from the front of a tall ship at the rear of the boat.
